Distant Strains

an invitation
to become someone’s friend
on Facebook—
trying hard to picture her
before I hit delete

I’m seventeen and have a girlfriend who covets mystical connections more than the physical contact I crave. For her birthday, I give her an album of Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar playing Indian classical music. Our song isn’t something you hear on the car radio while cruising Main Street on a Saturday night. We lie on the floor in a darkened room with a burning candle between us and pass notes back and forth, scraps of poetry and drivel; the distinction isn’t always clear. One evening, she blows out the candle, takes me downstairs, and blindfolds me in front of her parents. She has a present for me, maybe. If I can guess from the shape and sound what it is, it’s mine.

my fingers bleed on the neck
of the old balalaika
