His Eyes

During the long night, light in thin lines streamed across knotted sheets and carelessly tossed black lace—across his side and face where she frantically searched for comfort.  He slept with his back to her, to escape her eyes, bright blue with expectations.  In the morning, he slid out of bed, and left the room.

She gazed out at nothing while he drove her to her car.  He turned into the parking lot and stopped. She stepped out, turned and looked. He pulled away.
