Misty

There's a lot of bones buried over there, he thought to himself, as the mower ripped out stray strands of ivy. How many times had he mowed this lawn? Week after week after week. . . It always felt down-deep good to get it taken care of, especially that final strip, which signified that all was right again in his little piece of the world.

He made sure to cut near Misty's tree, which he had planted over her grave. The tree now stood taller than him.

She was a great dog. . . They were all great dogs, but she was truly special.

Following doctor's orders, he hadn't eaten anything for breakfast. He told the kids he wanted to drive himself to the hospital. "It's gonna be fine," he assured them.
