Let It Be

Long before I met him, Billy had amassed a huge collection of Beatles memorabilia. He tells me how he sold it all off in the 1970s, piece by piece, for cocaine money, keeping only a few small items for himself. He shows me the sticks he saved from some Beatles-branded popsicles.

Billy tells me of all the times he has carefully removed—at fifty dollars a pop—the innocuous replacement covers pasted on Yesterday and Today albums, so their owners could display those rare and coveted covers deemed at the time too shocking for release: the Beatles posed in butcher coats among chopped-up dolls and cuts of raw beef.

Billy tells me how he has left the censored version intact on his own copy. Once you peel off that outer layer, he says, you can never put it back. Each time one is removed, the remaining unpeeled copies become yet more valuable.
