Summer Intern

As I am buzzed through the locked front door of the children's hospital, odors thick as San Francisco fog engulf me: stale urine, cigarette smoke, over-cooked food. A large security guard silently escorts me through the labyrinthine halls until I am deposited in the hallway of my assigned ward. Only the nurse has room keys, and she is busy distributing meds. The gray of linoleum and concrete surrounds me and chameleon-like, my complexion quickly matches. I peer inside the locked rooms through thick plastic windows clear as vaseline. Inside are cages, large cribs with bars on all sides, some with top bars that can be slid and locked into place.
