New Year’s Eve

After hiking the loop trail for two hours in the icy wind on Assateague Island, I see a gibbous moon hover atop a dead pine. The bare limbs seem to stretch up with a desire to hug her, as if they want to dance me a goodbye. I clap my cold hands and snap a shot. When I drive away, the lighthouse appears ahead. It winks. I pull off and wait patiently for a better snap. With the click of my camera, a soft blue glimmers on the horizon, like a promise.
