Hidden Legacies

Columbine Canyon’s snow-covered trail never strays far from the creek. My partner and I slip past the gate and head into the evergreen forest that gently ascends to a broad meadow, then rises steeply to alpine ridges. Though a tall man, he takes steps small enough to match my own. We free saplings trapped by deadfall and run our hands over a ponderosa’s knotty wound. At our favorite copse, we rest in a patch of sunlight. Listening to rock spirits wherever they appear, we name them “Columbine Goddesses.”
