The Deadhouse: Americans Torn in Two

She makes the last cut, prays the ties hold and her stitches are tight, and the rotting disease doesn’t claim him before the shame of a stump does. Even with the heat, she pulls the frayed woolen blanket up over the boy’s torso and smoothes his hair. His cap still rests on the floor, the only thing reminding her which side of this war between the states he stands on.
