The dust storm rolls in from the west. A dirty red wall turning day into night. I scramble to shut windows and doors, cram damp towels into door gaps. Dry air smells of neighbour’s paddocks, of hopelessness. Fine grit squeezes through crevices and cracks covering every surface in the house. Tom hasn’t made it home from his day wandering barren paddocks, checking fences to keep non-existent stock from straying. The fifth year in a row of no income, overdraft stretched to maximum. I peer through curtains, hoping he’s sheltering with the dogs in the barn.
