I sit on a pew next to my parents and look around bewildered as “Ave Maria” blares from the church organ. On the nearest wall, a painting depicts a man being nailed to a cross. I turn away quickly. Straight ahead, statues with benevolent expressions fail to shield me from the ghastly sight of the same man hanging from a tall wooden cross. I long for the safety of my room.
