We leave early for our flight to Izmir on our way to Şirince. We realise, too late, that we should have alerted the bus driver to set us down at Selcuk for our connecting shuttle. Consequently, we are carried on to Kuşadası, and discover its citadel castle on Pigeon Island and its seventeenth-century caravanserai. We wander along the waterfront, and while away an hour or two…

a small girl
dances on the sand,
gathering seashells . . .
each find a treasure
each one still shiny

his line slack
an old fisherman
throws out his bait,
bread cast on the sea
of his eighty years
