Dreams of a Departing

A warm night, full of moon and spring peepers, brings me back. I dream again about the old house. We are back in those rooms in that wonderfully illogical time sequence of dreams—back in the spring sunlit front room with the bay window. Drenched in the honey-colored late-afternoon light, you with your coffee, me with tea, we sit together, planning the move. We are young once more, yet we bear the weight of our true years in our words, even more in our actions.

the sweetness
of kneeling on spring cool earth
to greet the first honeybees
gathering in the chalice
of a purple crocus

Again and again, this dream, half mist, half memory, returns. We did plan, changing our minds, then resolving to do what we had to do. We packed up, distributed things here and there, and finally on a rainy, gray day, moved away from the place where we braided our life together. As with all, time had her way with us. But in dreams we live there still, together, windows open to birdsong and the scent of spring.

a circlet of violets
woven with sweet grass
and robin song
