Recurring Dream Number One

On the beach the sky holds menacing deep grey clouds. Is it daytime or dawn or twilight? The light is too diffuse to tell. The sand is wet-colored and cold to the touch of bare toes. Out at sea a huge wave is building, a shade darker than the sky, with an insinuation of white foam. It’s building and building and there’s no escape for those of us who foolishly stayed on the beach despite a menacing sky and ambiguous time of day. The wave is growing and growing and there is no escape. There never is.

where are the gulls’ nests—
hiding in the beach grass
or behind the old wall?
