At the Museum

The art museum’s smallest room is filled with miniature landscapes. The painter restricted herself to just a few details per painting: a lone tree stump instead of a forest, for example, or a fire hydrant instead of the whole subdivision. Hillsides tend to be barren and the skies a uniform gray. I pause in front of each and hoist my eight-year-old niece up by the armpits for a brief look.

Later, leaving the parking garage, we watch from the back seat as a ten-dollar bill changes hands. She giggles. They hold the money like it's FRAGILE, she whispers in my ear.
