Dead a Long Time

The august sun on Rathlin island, beckons me outside. Remembering the cars I’d seen by the new ferry I head over there looking for rust. I love to run my fingers over the textures, scrutinise the patterns, feast on the colours, maybe take a photo. There is a Renault Scenic, and the irony amuses me. There are flat tyres, rusted rims, bashed in bodies, a Citroen Vantage with a boot full of confettied glass and a landrover, retired from Northern Ireland Water. They rest opposite the St.Thomas’s Church, cremating in the weather, going for scrap. So much detritus. Their inners are barnacled with human flotsam: cigarette butts, pens, paper cups, notebooks and randomly, rosemary dry now on a back shelf. All littering the landscape, waiting for the ferry and the final journey.
