New Life

The shop was near the central plaza in Santa Fe. I went upstairs, entered a long hallway with many doors. It felt like a dream. I could see there were workshop rooms and artist studios. One door had two signs. Help Wanted. Jewelry Classes.

I knew I couldn't afford time or money for classes. I needed work to support my two children and stay-at-home husband. The artist-jeweler looked up at me from his workbench, saying

"As a matter of fact I am, but I can't take classes," and I explained why.

"Do you have any experience?"

"No but I’m very creative."

"Well, let’s give it a try."

From that day on with simple instructions, I helped make the earrings for his shows, at first, make a hole with this, hammer on that. Later came the next big step:

always the fright –
first spark of
the jeweler's torch
