Desert Exorcism

A jumping cholla—untouched, unbidden, appearing out of nowhere—has made a visitation to my sneaker. Painful. Ignoring it is not an option, so I choose exorcism: I hit it with a stick, pray, pry, wince, stagger, beg for relief . . . and finally it’s off. It’s more grateful than I am, free to root and multiply.
