Out of Print

I first visited Ferrow's bookstore years ago. Entering, the bell on the door chimed a sad refrain, and the store looked empty. In a back room, a man sat slumped in an old wicker chair, snoring loudly. I cleared my throat repeatedly, until he finally stirred, eyes flicked open like Smaug in the Lonely Mountain. After I explained the nature of my visit, he pointed me to the nature section where I began to browse and fell in love with the bookstore.

And now, twenty years later, I return to the same street on a bitterly cold December afternoon, the onset of a downpour dulling the light. Turning the corner, the scene has changed. For nostalgia’s sake I step inside the bar.
