While looking for scissors, I stumble across a note from an old friend I have not seen or heard from in years whose words reappear at the bottom of the junk drawer: Had we never met I would miss you more… This jars loose a quote from a more recent acquaintance: In addition to extinct, or extinguished, stars, whose wobbly light continues, there are others, much nearer, but so new, we do not yet see them. On the next clear moonless night, let’s haul out the lounge chairs, make camp in the front yard, and stare at a swatch of sky until our eyes glass over. I want to catch a star winking anew, just the two of us, making that connection—so many friends in the world we’ll never see again. So many more we have yet to meet.

In springtime
everyone secretly
loves you
