twins this year—just gnome high—skittering about underfoot, chattering incessantly, abiding every hideyhole—no sense yet to tell flowers from food—all the hens-and-chicks have flown the coop—and I’ve not had to deadhead a single purple petunia all summer—

their umbrellas

A pointed nickname (no doubt from a sharp observer) for the garden yucca that dares me to weed (and has drawn blood more than once). Fiercely protective of its elongating stalk, its voluptuous buds. I applaud it flamenco-style (from a safe distance), ardently anticipating the creamy translucence of its pendulous blooms.
