Handmaiden

Sport is compulsory at school. We all sit cross-legged on the edge of the field while the teacher marks the roll and appoints the captains. They stand, stare at the faces in front of them and begin choosing their teams. The chosen ones proudly stand behind their captains.

As usual no-one picks me. I'm no good at sport and everyone knows it. Me and the other non-chosen kids are given the job of cutting up oranges and taking them out to the players at half-time. Then we collect the peels and put them in the rubbish bin.
